Why is water good for kidney stones?
Water is one of the most important ways of preventing kidney
stones, in fact. "The more water you
drink, the more diluted your urine will be," says Dr. Morgan. "This means that the
concentration of calcium
and other minerals in your urine will be less, reducing the chance of stone
formation.
Drinking about three liters of water per day to help your kidney
stones pass on their own. Even when you drink sufficient water, however,
kidney stones don't dissolve overnight. In fact, even small stones can take
weeks to months to pass. You can
also drink ginger ale, lemon-lime sodas, and fruit juices. Drink enough liquids throughout the day to make at least 2
quarts (2 liters) of urine every 24 hours. Drink enough to have light-coloured
urine.
Water helps the kidneys remove wastes from your blood
in the form of urine. Water also helps keep your blood vessels open so that
blood can travel freely to your kidneys, and deliver essential nutrients
to them. But if you become dehydrated, then it is more difficult for this
delivery system to work.
